“Opinions founded on prejudice are always sustained with the greatest of violence.”
Francis Jeffrey
Close your eyes and imagine with me our shared belief in safe neighborhoods, the Second Amendment, pro activism, and respect for law enforcement. Continue to imagine the place you come to revere as a safe haven is that no more, law enforcement, judicial system has failed to recognize the severity of the threat. What is left for you to do but your God given right to protect you and your love ones: so you buy a gun, weeks and months pass without any altercations in your pristine surroundings. Then one day your life is in jeopardy and you pull the trigger. Now imagine that person is black….

That person is Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville Florida, mother of three who at the time of this case gave birth to her third child, who was married to an abusive husband. That law enforcement has arrested on domestic violence charges and the courts freed after making these comments in his disposition “I got five baby mammas, and I [hit] every last one of them except for one.” (powers, daily beast) The estranged ex-husband Mr.Gray attacks the victim in the garage of her home, fearing for her life Marissa takes out her legally registered gun and fires a warning shot in the air. No one is hit or hurt yet she sits in a Florida prison sentenced to 20 years, lost custody of her children, and her family is not allowed to visit her children. Where is the fairness of Stand Your Ground was not this the reason the law was created to protect an individual in their home, their castle, their domain. Or is the spirit of the law only intended for a race other then African American or for that matter any skin color that makes this country the melting pot that it is. In wake of the grave injustice of the death of Trayvon Martin an the acquittal of George Zimmerman, this law needs to be revisited and stricken from the books. Which maybe near impossible in a very conservative republican state, an NRA sponsored bill, but not even trying does no justice for Mr. Martin, Ms. Alexander, or our nation as a whole.
